It is our pleasure to present the Political and Military Atlas of the Kingdom of Murcia, drawn up by the Military Engineer Juan José Ordovás in 1799. The publication of this work, the original of which is conserved in the General Military Archive of Madrid, represents an important step towards the recovery of Spanish bibliographic historical heritage.

The content of this edition is articulated in three parts:

The first part places the reader in the geographical and historical context of the Atlas by way of a preliminary study, with various graphic plans and motifs drawn up by the Engineer which are now conserved in the General Archive of Simancas and the Army Museum of Paris. The military services sheet (from the General Historical Archive of Segovia) and the transcription of all the original texts round off the analysis of the work from a contemporary history perspective.

The second part is the facsimile reproduction of the Atlas. There are 25 handwritten sheets, corresponding to a historic and descriptive account of the territorial demarcation, and 39 colour plans, drawn up with great technique, representing different examples of civil and military architecture in southeast Spain at the end of the 18th century.

The third and final part of the book aims to provide a current testimony of the former kingdom of Murcia. Past and present have been brought together in a spectacular photographic review of the current state of the different places represented in the original work, with this edition containing 26 plates, plus explicative texts, using modern media to portray buildings and landscapes described in the original manuscript.

The monumental nature of the document is reflected in the edition. The reader may complete his/her library with a full-colour 240-page copy, printed in A3 format (297 x 420 cm.) and high quality binding.
